Book Report: “Buzz”:  the science and lore of alcohol and caffeine.

Video Summary:

For another few days I’ll be hovering around one cup of  coffee, approximately 100 mg of caffeine.

Didn’t sleep that well last night.

I am replacing energy drinks with Koolaid-sweetened drinks to curb cravings.

Unfortunately, the sugar exacerbates my acid reflux just like caffeine, which may have affected my sleep

Book Report on “Buzz: The Science and Lore of Alcohol and Caffeine“:

Alcohol is not part of this series but I’ll comment on it.

Four freely available vices:  caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, and sugar. I like all of them!

Caffeine is the only one I feel I am addicted to and need to have on a daily basis.

Few weeks ago I had a pivotal moment where I overindulged on a combination of all 4 of them.

Something had to be done!

“Buzz” concentrates on alcohol and caffeine. The book concentrates more on the technical and chemical aspects of the drugs.

Alcohol is a poison to the human body just like caffeine.

Follows alcohol from the moment it enters the mouth, following it into the stomach, intestines, blood stream and liver.  The ethanol molecule is attacked by alcohol dehydrogenase in the stomach and liver.

If you drink less than one drink an hour, the body can handle it.  More than that and the ethanol enters the bloodstream and you get intoxicated.

Ethanol is a smaller molecule than caffeine and effects many body functions in variety of subtle ways.
